The Public Library Annual Report is part of the national Public Library Survey; a federally funded program coordinated by the Institute for Museum and LIbrary Services (IMLS) and conducted on an annual basis to collect and publish accurate, consistent, and comparable public library statistics from each state. IMLS collects the data under the mandate in the Museum and Library Services Act of 2018 (PL 115-410), as stated in section 210. The data is intended for use on the local, state, and federal levels.
The data that is collected on the Public Library Annual Report is used to compile the Maine Annual Statistical Tables and the Public Library Directory. The data conforms to the national data format with data points and definitions created by State Data Coordinators in cooperation with IMLS, American Institutes for Research, and Library Statistics Working Group.
Data collected from the Maine Public Library Annual Report is reported to the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) as part of the Public Libraries Survey (PLS). Communicating Library Cost and Value Using
Public Library Annual Report and Community Data
https://www.maine.gov/msl/services/calculator.htm
Library Value Calculator
What is the library worth to your community? Use the Value Calculator to show how much your community would pay out-of-pocket for library services.
Using your Public Library Annual Report
Return on Investment (ROI)
To calculate the ROI, you will need the total benefits from the value calculator and municipal appropriation from the Public Library Annual Report. The calculation results in the value of the library’s services and programs for every local dollar invested.
Total Yearly Saving to the Community
Calculate the total yearly savings to the community by taking the total value of library use from the Value Calculator minus the total operating costs of the library.
Savings to Community = Total Value of Library Use - Cost of Investment
Cost per Household to Fund the Library
To calculate the average cost of funding the library per household
