Death education programming includes topics like: end of life planning, hospice care, living wills/advance health directives, talking to children about death, green burials/cemeteries, obituary writing, Maine's Death with Dignity law, and author talks (there are several authors in Maine who have written about their grief).
“A Death cafe is a group directed discussion of death with no agenda, objectives, or themes…. with an objective to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives." --Leona Oceania, Die Well Death Education
Facilitators are there to keep things on track, keep the conversation going, answer questions, and correct misinformation. Often attendees have lots of questions. A true Death Cafe does not have topics, agendas, or presentations. It is simply a group guided conversation about death.
Created by Holly Williams at the Bangor Public Library (holly.williams@bangorpubliclibrary.org), this LibGuide contains resources for libraries looking to provide resources and programming around death education and support.
