Grant Services for Librarians and Libraries

Our Reference Department is happy to help with grant questions that librarians or board members might have. We understand that librarians at small and rural libraries often don't have the time or resources to search for grants for programming or capital expenses. We are glad to offer our support with this.

We will do our best to keep this resource updated regularly. Please note that it is not all-inclusive and that funders may change their areas of priority from time to time.

The reference desk is staffed 9 am - 5 pm, Monday through Friday, and the email and phone are actively monitored. We welcome your calls or emails. If you are aware of additional grant-makers or would like to ask a particular question, please feel free to contact us

Quick Tips

  • Are you ready to ask for funding?
    •   Have you identified the problem you are trying to solve?
    •   Have you given your organization enough time to complete the project?
    •   How will you evaluate its impact?
  • Have you given all community members a chance to participate?
    •   Does your website/organization accept donations of all sizes and formats [e.g., check, digital, cash]?
    •   Are citizens able to donate in other ways [e.g., time, skills, marketing]?
  • Have you consulted with similar agencies that have done similar projects?
  • Check out our Professional Development Collection for additional print resources on grants and fundraising.
  • The Maine Philanthropy Center and Maine Association of Nonprofits are also excellent agencies to assist with fundraising efforts.
